I have read a great deal of Thomas Mann and Franz Kafka in translation, but little from other German-language authors. Buying and reading a used copy of the hardback “Great German Short Novels and Stories,” edited by Victor Lange, gave me a good introduction to several German authors I had not read before: among them Goethe, Schiller /5.
The book is simply a wonderful experience of a lot of great stories. There is something for most any taste in literature.
My advice for starters would be the short, lively pieces with nice twists at the end, such as Schnitzler’s Fate of the Baron and Sudermann’s New Year’s Eve Confession.5/5(1).
